Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated

In the early 1950's, Dr. Parlett L. Moore, Phi Beta Sigma's National Education Director, and later International President, launced a youth organization originally called the Beta Club to combat the scarcity of positive role models for young males.  On April 23, 1954, the "MIGHTY" Montgomery, Alabama Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity, Inc. organized the first Sigma Beta Club chapter.  Marcus "Too Smooth" Williams, Jeremy Wilson, Alex Donovan, Michael Anderson, and three other young men that have passed on: William Anderson (1968), Tore' Lucas (1986), and John Lewis (1991), became charter members of the organization and this chapter.

Now 57 years later, in the form of the Sigma Beta Club, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. continues to answer the call in making a difference in the lives of our adolescents.  As the youth organization of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Men help develop Strong Values, Leadership Skills, Social Responsibility, Cultural Awarness, and Pride amongst the membership.  Through wholesome interactions, the Brothers of Sigma serve as mentors and guides to the members and participate in Academic Skills Enrichment, Athletic Contests, Social and Cultural Activities, Community Service Projects, and more.

Who Can Join?

Young men between the ages of 8 and 18 can join the Sigma Beta Club. To be a member of the Xi Beta Sigma Chapter, you must maintain at least a 2.5 AGPA, 30 Credit Hours (DPHS students), and a strong will to succeed.

Where Can I Join?

You can join the Sigma Beta Club at any registered Alumni chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity that has a Sigma Beta Club. There are two chapters in Detroit.
  • The G.R.U.E.S.O.M.E. Xi Beta Sigma Chapter
  • The N.A.S.T.Y. Nu Alpha Sigma Chapter

The Xi Beta Sigma Chapter Sigma Beta Club has been around for over 20 years. The Xi Beta Sigma Chapter itself was chartered in June of 1940.

How Do I Join?

You can be refered to the program by someone who is a member of the club, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity or Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. You may also join when you attend the Sigma Beta Club Rallys. "Not everyman can be a Beta Man", you have to pass the judgement of the advisor, Mr. Calvin Patillo, the Executive Board (Chapter Officiary), and of course, you must pass the judgement of your big brothers before you can be successfully initiated into the organization. Remember, they don't call us G.R.U.E.S.O.M.E. for nothing! Do you think you are down for the challenge?
